FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who is True North Partners?
We are a company that is built on morals and ethics. While our goal is to become your trusted advisor for all of life’s events, we often find that our clients become part of the family. Maggie and Matt focus on building intimate and life-long relationships with clients. As our family of clients grows, we want to include other generations and others who matter to you.
What is our investment philosophy?
Our investment philosophy is quite simple. We aim to build a portfolio that matches YOUR risk tolerance. We find that the thoughts expressed around investments might not match emotions during market fluctuations. That is why we walk each client through a risk tolerance exercise and tailor your portfolio to suit. We also believe that it is our job to make your money work as hard as humanly possible for you. We strive to lower investment fees while using broadly diversified investments with practical expectations for risk and return.
Do you only focus on investments?
Our value is rooted in the comprehensive planning partnership with each client. We look at the entire landscape of your financial life and that includes tax planning, estate planning, personal financial planning, investment planning, insurance planning and retirement planning. The greatest value we can provide is acting as your financial coach throughout all market cycles.
Who do we work with?
Families, individuals, small business owners, professionals, and executives. We have worked with clients from a variety of financial situations. One of our proudest accomplishments is working with several generations within a family. It is not uncommon to have clients bring a child to our office to learn about the value of saving. Truly a family affair!
What are the fees?
We can be compensated in three ways. Most commonly, we charge a fee for the assets that we manage. The fee is based on a percentage of the assets under our care and is deducted from your account quarterly. On your quarterly statement, you will clearly see all fees that are assessed to your portfolio in a straightforward, clear way. Another method is a consulting fee. This is an annual fee that is based on the complexity of your plan. The final method is on a commission basis and comes into play when we use financial products that are appropriate for your personalized plan. During the initial consultation, fees are discussed in detail to ensure that we have established an upfront relationship that is clear and transparent.
Why is the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification important?
The CFP® certification is the gold standard in the financial industry. The CFP® certification process identifies to the public that those authorized to use the CFP® certification marks have met rigorous professional standards and adhere to the principles of integrity, objectivity, competence, fairness, confidentiality, professionalism and diligence when dealing with clients.
Are you a fiduciary?
True North Partners serves in a fiduciary capacity, which means that we always act in the best interest of our clients. We take the responsibility of acting as your advisor very seriously and are dedicated to helping you pursue your goals with the utmost honesty and integrity.
If we partner together, does that mean we have to move accounts and start over?
Our first step is to review your current plan and address the areas of strength and weakness that we find. A client is not required to move accounts although there may be advantages that we will thoroughly discuss and decide what is in your best interest. Fortunately, we can work with three of the major custodians and can keep continuity.
